Add a Japanese voice

Listening uses the Japanese voice of your device. Some browsers and systems don't include one. Open the section for your system, then close and reopen the browser.

Quickest fix: on a computer, open the site in Microsoft Edge (natural Japanese voices) or Google Chrome (“Google 日本語”). Brave, Opera and Firefox only use the voices installed on the system.

Windows
  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Speech.
  2. Under Manage voices, choose Add voices, pick Japanese (日本語) and install it.
  3. Restart the browser and press Test audio again.
macOS
  1. Open System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content.
  2. Next to System voice, choose Manage Voices…, open Japanese and download Kyoko or Otoya.
  3. Restart the browser and press Test audio again.
Android
  1. Open Settings and search for “Text-to-speech output”.
  2. Choose Speech Services by Google, open its settings → Install voice data → Japanese.
  3. Reopen the browser (Chrome works best).
iPhone and iPad
  1. Open Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices.
  2. Choose Japanese and download a voice.
  3. Close Safari completely and open the page again.
Linux
  1. Browsers use speech-dispatcher, which rarely has a natural Japanese voice.
  2. Chrome or Chromium with an internet connection usually offers “Google 日本語”.
